Two adults who died in a house fire in Waterford have been identified by Irish media as Philip E. and Kim E. Gardaí have confirmed that two adults and two children died, while two other children remain critically ill in hospital.
The adults were named by local Irish media, but An Garda Síochána has not published their names. The Vector is therefore identifying them only by first name and surname initial, in line with its policy for private individuals.
The fire broke out at a house in Birchwood, Waterford City, shortly after 5am on Tuesday. Gardaí said the two adults and two of their children died, while two other children were taken to hospital for treatment.
Gardaí have begun a murder investigation after saying that a person or persons unknown attacked the house and started the fire deliberately. The property has been declared a crime scene and is undergoing technical examination.
The two injured children were taken to Children’s Health Ireland at Crumlin in Dublin, where Gardaí said they were receiving treatment for critical injuries. Family liaison officers have been appointed, and the coroner and State Pathologist have been notified.
An incident room has been established at Waterford Garda Station. Investigators are appealing for information from anyone who was near Birch Avenue or the surrounding roads between 4.30am and 5.30am, including drivers who may have dashcam footage.
The investigation remains at an early stage. Gardaí have not announced an arrest, suspect or motive, and reports circulating about the possible method or reason for the attack have not been treated as established fact here. The naming of the adults is a media identification, not a formal Garda release.
