Anthropic reports growth to investors, with adjusted-profit caveat

Anthropic told prospective investors that its revenue reached $16.8bn in the third quarter, up 45% from the previous quarter, according to reports based on accounts from people who attended a private meeting. The Claude developer also said it was profitable on an adjusted basis, although the reports did not provide a full public breakdown of that measure.

The figures were presented at Anthropic’s headquarters in San Francisco on Wednesday, 14 October, during a meeting intended to introduce the company to potential investors before an initial public offering. Revenue was reported at $4.7bn in the first quarter, $11.6bn in the second and $16.8bn in the third.

That sequence shows exceptionally rapid expansion, but the latest number is still an account given to investors rather than a conventional public earnings release. Anthropic is privately held, and the reported figures came from people familiar with, or attending, the meeting. The company did not immediately publicly confirm the numbers.

The profitability claim also carries an important qualification. Anthropic told attendees that it was profitable on an adjusted basis, but the reports did not set out which costs were excluded. That means the claim cannot yet be treated as equivalent to a fully disclosed statutory or audited net-profit result.

The meeting comes as investors reassess the cost of building frontier AI systems. Companies such as Anthropic are spending heavily on computing power, chips and data centres, while attempting to turn demand for services such as Claude and Claude Code into recurring revenue.

Reuters has previously reported that Anthropic’s revenue last year was nearly $4.6bn, while its operating loss exceeded $8bn after excluding certain liability-related write-downs. The same report said the company had made long-term commitments worth hundreds of billions of dollars for cloud services, computing and infrastructure.

Anthropic is seeking a valuation of more than $2tn, according to Reuters, and its listing would be an early test of whether public-market investors will accept the sector’s combination of rapid growth and very high infrastructure costs. The timing remains uncertain, with reports suggesting the flotation could come after November’s US midterm elections and before rival OpenAI goes public.

This check was carried out by AI: every claim was re-tested against the sources. Even an approved article can contain errors — stay critical.

The central financial figures and the adjusted-profit claim are consistently reported by Reuters and BBC News from people connected to the investor meeting. The article clearly attributes the information and preserves the uncertainty around the accounting basis and proposed listing.

Editor's note
The reported revenue figures and adjusted-profit claim are supported by Reuters and BBC reporting based on investor-meeting sources. Anthropic has not publicly supplied a full accounting breakdown, so the precise meaning of adjusted profitability and the IPO timing remain uncertain.
