Nineteen injured in Channel Tunnel bus–train collision
Eurostar services were suspended in both directions after the collision at the terminal on the French side.
At least 19 people were injured when a minibus and a freight train collided at the Channel Tunnel site on the French side on Thursday evening, according to local reports. Five were placed in France’s highest emergency category, but an initial assessment said none was in a life-threatening condition. Eurostar services through the tunnel were halted in both directions.
The collision happened at about 19:30 local time at the Eurotunnel site near Fréthun in Pas-de-Calais, local broadcaster Delta FM reported. The minibus was carrying lorry drivers who were due to travel on a LeShuttle service. The incident took place around the loading area rather than inside the Channel Tunnel itself, according to the initial account.
Delta FM’s latest report put the number injured at 19. It said 14 people were classified as being in a relative emergency and five in an absolute emergency, the French system’s most serious category. The report also said that no casualty had a prognosis that was considered life-threatening at that stage.
A large emergency response was sent to the site. Firefighters from several towns in the Calais area attended alongside France’s emergency medical service, SAMU, while Eurotunnel’s own firefighters also responded. A helicopter arrived at the site at about 20:45, according to Delta FM.
The first reports do not establish exactly how the collision happened. Delta FM described an accident involving a minibus and a freight train at the loading platform, while an agency report published by the Spanish edition of the Huffington Post described a freight train colliding with a bus. Neither account confirmed which vehicle was moving, or why.
The disruption immediately affected cross-Channel passengers. The Huffington Post reported, citing an initial statement from the local prefecture relayed by TF1, that Eurostar services between France and the United Kingdom were completely suspended in both directions. The early reports did not give a timetable for resuming services.
The Channel Tunnel links Folkestone with Coquelles in northern France. The UK Government says Eurostar is the international passenger operator using the tunnel, while Eurotunnel operates the passenger and freight shuttle services. That makes the incident relevant to travellers, lorry drivers and freight operators on both sides of the Channel.
Delta FM said a press briefing was scheduled for 22:15 local time. At the time of publication, authorities had not released a final account of the circumstances, the condition of those injured or the likely duration of the disruption. Further updates may therefore change the casualty figures or service information.
