Barclays plans 5,000 job cuts in AI efficiency drive
The bank says technology investment will help reduce fixed costs and improve returns.
Barclays says it expects to cut around 5,000 jobs by the end of 2026 as it expands its use of artificial intelligence and other technology. The cuts represent about 5% of its workforce, according to Reuters’ report on the bank’s announcement.
The bank said on Thursday that the cuts were part of a longer-term efficiency programme rather than a response to an immediate financial crisis. Around 1,000 of the planned reductions had already taken place in the first half of the year, with about 4,000 expected in the second half, according to the reported update.
Barclays reported third-quarter profit of £2.3bn, up 12% from a year earlier, Reuters reported. According to Reuters, the result nevertheless fell short of analysts’ expectations, with weaker fixed-income trading affecting performance.
The bank has been increasing its use of AI tools across parts of its business. Anthropic, which supplies Barclays with Claude, said earlier this month that more than 16,000 Barclays employees had adopted the assistant and that the bank expected Claude Code adoption to reach half of its developers by the end of 2026.
The announcement illustrates the tension between productivity claims and employment. Companies can use AI to automate tasks, support staff or reorganise departments, but the effect on total employment depends on how much additional work is created and how quickly workers can move into different roles.
Barclays also announced a further £500m share buyback, according to the reported results update. The bank’s decision is likely to intensify debate over whether gains from automation should primarily support shareholders, fund investment or protect jobs during a period when banks are under pressure to control costs.

One story, several perspectives
What is established
- Barclays announced plans to reduce its workforce by around 5,000 jobs in 2026.
- The bank linked the programme to technology and efficiency investment.
- Barclays reported £2.3bn in third-quarter profit, according to Reuters.
Left
Arguments If automation increases productivity, workers should share in the gains through job protection, retraining, shorter hours or stronger employment protections rather than bearing the adjustment alone.
Values Economic security, worker power and a fair distribution of productivity gains.
Consequences Intervention could slow some restructuring and raise costs, but may preserve skills and demand in the wider economy.
Centre
Arguments Banks must remain competitive, but large redundancies should be accompanied by credible transition support, transparent consultation and investment in skills that genuinely lead to new jobs.
Values Economic dynamism balanced with social responsibility and evidence-based regulation.
Consequences A managed transition could protect affected workers without preventing firms from adopting useful technology.
Right
Arguments A profitable company should be free to reorganise around better technology, because restricting efficiency gains would weaken Britain’s financial sector and ultimately reduce investment and pay.
Values Private enterprise, competition and flexible labour markets.
Consequences Faster restructuring may improve productivity and shareholder returns, while making some occupations less secure.
