Video-game developer BioWare is closing after more than 30 years, according to an announcement on the studio’s website. The closure also ends early development on the next Mass Effect project.

BioWare was founded in Canada and became known internationally for role-playing games including Baldur’s Gate, Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Story-led role-playing games were central to its catalogue.

In a statement published on Wednesday, the studio said it had been more than a development company and that closing after three decades was difficult. The announcement thanked players and communities for supporting its games.

The closure comes after a period of restructuring across Electronic Arts, BioWare’s parent company. The Associated Press reported that the wider changes involved hundreds of job losses, including about 50 at BioWare, although the exact employment consequences of the closure may develop further.

The next Mass Effect title was in early development, but the studio’s statement said early development was ending. It did not provide a new timetable for the franchise or indicate that another developer would continue the project.

BioWare’s closure reflects the financial pressure facing large game studios, where development can require years of work and substantial budgets before a release generates revenue. It also marks the loss of a studio whose games helped shape expectations around player choice, character relationships and long-form interactive storytelling.
