French prosecutors have opened a terrorism investigation after a gunman opened fire in the Paris suburb of Trappes. One person was killed and four others were wounded, according to authorities and news agencies.
The shooting happened on Friday in Trappes and neighbouring La Verrière, west of Paris. The suspect was arrested shortly afterwards, according to the French anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office and reports from the Associated Press and AFP.
Prosecutors say they are investigating murder linked to a terrorist enterprise, with an aggravating circumstance related to the victim’s actual or perceived race, ethnic group, nationality or religion. That classification describes the scope of the investigation; it does not establish a final motive or guilt.
The French Council of Muslims described the incident as reflecting what it called the consequences of hate speech and stigmatisation. Local officials said at least two of the victims were from immigrant backgrounds, while investigators continued to establish the circumstances.
The attack came as France prepared for further protests over the cost of living. French authorities said tens of thousands of police officers and gendarmes would be deployed for planned demonstrations, while several Paris museums announced closures.
The case remains active. The terrorism investigation does not establish the suspect’s motive or guilt.
