Typhoon Champi grounds flights across Taiwan

Schools and offices closed as the storm brought strong winds and torrential rain to the island.

Taiwan closed schools and offices and cancelled hundreds of flights as Typhoon Champi passed near the island on Friday. The storm weakened before reaching Taiwan but still caused dangerous conditions and disruption.

The storm’s centre was forecast to remain offshore as it moved past Taiwan’s north-eastern tip before turning towards Japan’s south-western islands. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration advised people in coastal areas to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity and driving.

The Associated Press reported that all 262 domestic flights and 669 international flights were cancelled. AP reported that high-speed rail services on Taiwan’s western coast were operating normally.

Taiwanese authorities said almost 1,300 people had been evacuated from vulnerable mountainous areas. AP reported that one person died after being swept away by waves on Thursday and that dozens of injuries had been reported.

The typhoon had previously reached much stronger winds in the western Pacific before weakening near Taiwan. Authorities also warned of falling objects, flooding and dangerous seas.

Japan’s south-western islands and parts of the northern Philippines were also affected, with flight cancellations, power cuts and precautionary evacuations reported. The storm’s wider path means conditions and transport disruption may continue after its closest approach to Taiwan.
