Microsoft offers buyouts to about 60,000 staff across four countries
Eligible employees in the UK and three other countries are being offered voluntary exit packages as Microsoft reorganises around AI.
Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 employees, including eligible staff in the UK. The programme covers selected teams, including some working on artificial intelligence.
The offer is available to eligible employees in participating teams in the UK, United States, Canada and India, according to a Microsoft statement reported by Reuters. According to Reuters, it applies to staff at level 70 and below.
The affected areas include AI experiences, Copilot, finance, human resources, Xbox and Windows and Devices. Microsoft said some teams, including sales, marketing and security, were excluded.
The programme is voluntary. Eligibility for an offer does not mean an employee will leave.
Microsoft has more than 220,000 employees worldwide and about 6,000 in the UK, according to Sky News. The company has not said how many UK employees will be eligible or how many it expects to leave.
The inclusion of AI teams raises questions about how the programme could affect Microsoft's work on the technology.
A voluntary buyout is not the same as a confirmed redundancy programme. The final number of departures will depend on how many eligible staff accept the offer, and the company has not announced a total headcount reduction under the scheme.
For the UK technology labour market, the move is another sign that AI investment can involve both new demand for specialised roles and pressure on existing teams. It is too early to determine the net effect on Microsoft’s British workforce.
