Previously unreleased footage from David Bowie’s 1978 Isolar II tour is scheduled to be presented in arenas from 2027. The project, titled Stage, is scheduled to premiere in Berlin during the city’s film festival.

The film was recorded during Bowie’s 1978 concerts at London’s Earls Court but was never released in its original form. The footage has been restored and remastered by Brett Morgen, director of the Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream.

Stage will use multiple screens, integrated lighting and immersive sound rather than showing the material as a conventional cinema screening. The organisers say the format is intended to create the feeling of a live performance.

The world premiere is scheduled for 14 February 2027 at Berlin’s Uber Arena as part of the 77th Berlin Film Festival. Tickets are due to go on sale on 28 October, according to the Bowie estate’s announcement.

The project could bring archival performances to new audiences. Its use of technology may also prompt debate about recreating a deceased performer’s image and stage presence.

How audiences and critics will receive Stage remains to be seen. Its artistic and commercial reception will depend on how audiences respond to the balance between historical footage and a modern arena presentation.
