SK Hynix profits surge as AI drives memory demand
The South Korean chipmaker reported record quarterly operating profit as demand for high-bandwidth memory outstripped supply.
SK Hynix has reported a record operating profit of 83.3tn South Korean won, or about $62.8bn, for its latest quarter. AP reported that the result was almost seven times higher than a year earlier, attributing the increase to intense demand for memory used in artificial-intelligence data centres.
The figures were reported as the company became one of the clearest beneficiaries of the continuing expansion of AI computing. Memory chips are essential to the servers that train and run large AI systems, particularly high-bandwidth memory placed close to processors.
The result beat market expectations and pushed SK Hynix shares higher in Asian trading. AP linked the company’s performance to demand for advanced memory as technology firms invest in data centres and computing infrastructure.
The strength of demand is also creating supply concerns. SK Hynix executives have warned that the industry may face severe shortages next year and that demand could remain above available production capacity beyond 2030.
That forecast is a company assessment rather than an independently verified prediction. It reflects the difficulty of rapidly expanding semiconductor capacity, where new factories require large investments, specialised equipment and lengthy qualification processes.
For British businesses, any shortages could have indirect consequences through the cost and availability of servers, cloud computing and other digital infrastructure. Higher memory prices could raise the expense of AI projects, while shortages could give the largest technology companies an advantage in securing supplies.
The results do not show that every part of the semiconductor market is equally strong. They chiefly reflect the current position of high-bandwidth memory and related products linked to AI investment, rather than a guarantee of sustained growth across the whole chip industry.
