Binance suspends withdrawals after suspected hack; £4.8bn loss unconfirmed

The cryptocurrency exchange says about $6.3bn was affected and roughly $3bn has been frozen while investigations continue.

Binance has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals after a security incident that the exchange estimates affected about $6.3bn in digital assets. The company says it will cover user losses, but the cause and full scale of the incident remain under investigation.

Binance said an attacker may have compromised a laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer before gaining access to a service container and submitting unauthorised withdrawal transactions. The exchange said it had found no evidence that wallet private keys were leaked.

The company said about $3bn had been frozen on-chain with help from blockchain partners. Reuters identified Tether and Circle among companies freezing assets linked to the incident, although the amounts and total recovery position may change as tracing continues.

Binance said it had revoked authorisations associated with the affected addresses and was working with law-enforcement and blockchain-intelligence partners. The exchange has not yet published a full technical post-mortem, so the route taken by the attacker has not been independently established.

The company said customer funds were safe and that it would cover losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users and company funds. That is a statement of Binance’s intended response, not an independent assessment of the exchange’s solvency or the final value of missing assets.

Reuters described crypto markets as already under pressure from wider technology and investment concerns. Reuters reported that bitcoin and ether fell after the news, while shares in several listed crypto-related companies also declined in late trading.

Binance told users to rely on its official channels while the investigation continues. The suspension interrupts normal access to funds for customers even if the exchange ultimately makes them whole.

Centre

Arguments Exchanges need clear operational standards, reserve transparency and rapid incident reporting, while customers should understand that digital assets carry unusual risks.

Values Proportional regulation, transparency and institutional resilience.

Consequences Common standards could improve confidence without banning a developing financial sector.

Right

Arguments Users choose private, decentralised assets and should bear responsibility for where they hold them. Government guarantees could encourage careless risk-taking and protect large platforms from market discipline.

Values Individual responsibility, competition and limited state intervention.

Consequences A lighter regime may preserve innovation but leave customers more exposed when platforms fail.
