The United Nations has called for an independent investigation after a Yemeni staff member of its human rights office died in Houthi custody. The UN said Mohammad el Shami had been arbitrarily detained for more than two years.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk said on Saturday that el Shami had been held by the Houthi movement since 6 June 2024. He called for an urgent and independent investigation and for the release of other detained personnel.
The UN has demanded an urgent, independent investigation into the circumstances of the death.
The case adds to concerns about the treatment of UN and humanitarian workers in Yemen. The conflict has left the country divided between Houthi-controlled areas and forces aligned with the internationally recognised government, while regional tensions have repeatedly affected aid operations.
Reports of detention do not by themselves establish the legal basis for the arrest or the cause of death. The UN described the detention as arbitrary, while the Houthis’ response was not included in the sources available for this edition.
International agencies depend on local staff to deliver humanitarian and human-rights work in places where foreign personnel cannot operate freely. Detentions can restrict monitoring, complicate aid delivery and make families and colleagues reluctant to cooperate with international organisations.
The UN said the death was a grave development and urged the Houthi authorities to release other detained personnel. An investigation would need to establish what happened during his detention.
No independent finding on responsibility for the death had been published by 07:00 on Sunday. The facts therefore remain limited to the UN’s account and its demand for scrutiny.
