There is news on this story (Wednesday, 21 October 2026, 18:00): African health ministers called to Ebola crisis meeting
Nigeria has confirmed one imported case of Ebola in the Federal Capital Territory. The patient arrived from Uganda and is receiving care in isolation, while public-health teams begin contact tracing.
Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health said the case was confirmed by laboratory testing on 20 October. The patient is a woman who recently arrived on an international flight from Uganda and had been treated at a private hospital before the diagnosis was confirmed.
The ministry said the patient is now isolated and receiving medical care. It has not described the case as evidence of wider community transmission, and the statement does not report additional confirmed cases in Nigeria.
Contact tracing has begun, with 44 close contacts identified at the time of the announcement. The ministry said health teams were monitoring people who may have been exposed, including healthcare workers, patients, carers and travel contacts.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and other authorities have increased surveillance and are supporting infection-prevention measures at the hospital. The ministry said healthcare facilities nationwide had been asked to identify and report suspected cases promptly.
The World Health Organisation said the case involved Ebola Bundibugyo virus disease and was imported. It described Nigeria as the fifth country to detect the virus since an outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May.
Ebola can cause severe illness, but the Nigerian statement gives no basis for estimating how the case will develop or whether further cases will occur. The public-health response described so far is focused on isolation, tracing and surveillance rather than predictions about the outbreak’s spread.
