Nigeria has confirmed an imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease, while European health authorities say the risk to the wider EU and European Economic Area remains very low. Contact tracing and monitoring are continuing.

The World Health Organization said the patient was a woman who had recently travelled from Uganda to Nigeria. She developed symptoms after arriving in the country and tested positive on 20 October.

Nigeria’s health authorities identified 44 contacts in an early investigation, according to the WHO. The WHO said the patient was isolated and receiving medical care, while officials worked to reconstruct her travel and exposure history.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said on Friday that Ebola cases had also been detected in Kenya and that the likelihood of further spread in Europe after an imported case was very low.

The agencies are describing an imported case, not a confirmed outbreak in Nigeria. Monitoring contacts is intended to identify possible infections early and prevent onward transmission.

The virus involved is Bundibugyo Ebola virus, a distinct Ebola species. The available public statements do not establish whether the patient’s husband or other contacts are infected, and no conclusion should be drawn from the case about an individual reader’s health.

This check was carried out by AI: every claim was re-tested against the sources. Even an approved article can contain errors — stay critical.

The confirmed Nigerian case, contact count and European risk assessment are supported by WHO and ECDC statements. The article avoids identifying the patient and does not imply a risk to individual readers.

  • confirmed Nigeria confirmed one imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease. — WHO regional office statement. source
  • confirmed The ECDC assessed the overall risk to the EU and EEA population as very low. — ECDC assessment published on 23 October. source
Editor's note
The WHO and ECDC provide the strongest available sources. The article distinguishes one confirmed imported Nigerian case from wider outbreak claims and avoids medical advice.
